Air Bags | NHTSA
In 25 years—from 1987 to 2012—frontal air bags saved 39,976 lives. That’s enough people to fill a major league ballpark. NHTSA provides information about the safety benefits of frontal and side air bags and the importance of using seat belts—your first line of defense. We also test and provide guidance on the risks of counterfeit and defective air bags, and urge vehicle owners with recalled air bags to immediately get their air bags replaced by a dealer.

Driver behaviour in fog is not only a question of degraded visibility – A simulator study
Driver behaviour in fog is not only a question of degraded visibility – A simulator study
The aim of this simulator study was to determine whether the effects of fog on driver behaviour were identical for a given road type and whether they could explain fog-related crashes according to road type. Thirty-three participants drove on both two-lane rural roads and motorways according to three visibility conditions (clear weather, 60 m-visibility and 30 m-visibility) and two driving situations (non-free driving and free driving). The variables were: Speeds (Ss), Headway Distances (HDs) and Headway Times (HTs). Fog was simulated using special software designed as part of the French Predit project VOIR, allowing both realistic vehicle headlights and halos to be displayed....

WHO | Speed management : A road safety manual for decision-makers and practitioners
This speed management manual proposes simple, effective and low-cost solutions to excessive and inappropriate speed that can be implemented on a national or local level. It targets governments, non-governmental organizations and road safety practitioners, particularly those in low- and middle-income countries. The manual is based on a modular structure that provides evidence, examples, case studies and practical steps on how to manage vehicle speed.

Stability control of heavy vehicles, In Lecture Notes in Control and Information Sciences
Résumé : Accidents involving Heavy Vehicles (HV) have serious consequences for road users, and incidents induce major congestion or damage to the environment or the infrastructure. Statistics show that accidents involving such vehicles are more serious than light vehicles (LV). The mortality rate is twice in an accident involving a heavy vehicle (see table 1.1). While they constitute only 3% vehicles in traffic, HV represent 10% of the vehicles involved in fatal accidents (13% of HV-related accidents are deadly against 6% for LV, and 85% of deaths are not HV users). Several types of truck accidents can occur on the road. The most important risks involving HV are rollover (Roll instability), jackknifing (Yaw instability), lane departure (Transversal instability) and collision (Longitudinal instability). All these accidents are characterized by appropriate risks criteria. These are used in accident analysis and designing appropriate prevention systems (warning systems and active control). In this work, we focus on the criteria of rollover and lane departure, but the developed approaches can be generalized to other criteria and other types of accidents.

IFSTTAR Street-Crossing Simulator: Technical Overview and Applications in Road Safety Research
IFSTTAR Street-Crossing Simulator: Technical Overview and Applications in Road Safety Research
Résumé : Pedestrians are known to be very vulnerable road users. Since the 70ties, road safety scientists have been interested in investigating pedestrian behaviour (especially of children and older people who are at the greatest risk), but were long time limited to accident and observational studies. Experimental studies in real world conditions were complex [Lee84, Dem92], while laboratory experiments used simplified video settings (e.g., [Oxl05]) that did not insure either interactivity or perception-action coupling. Whereas driving simulators have been for decades a valuable tool for investigations of human behaviour and validation of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), the development of pedestrian simulators is still in the early stages. Thanks to the development of Virtual Reality (VR) technology, interactive street-crossing simulation devices have come into use in the early 2000s. This kind of devices enables studies on pedestrian behaviour in hazardous traffic situations (e.g. crossing scenarios) by offering pedestrian-vehicle interactions and the precise control of a large range of infrastructure configurations, speeds, gaps and types of approaching vehicles, as well as illumination conditions.

Methodologies to assess usability and safety of ADAS and automated vehicle
Methodologies to assess usability and safety of ADAS and automated vehicle
In the framework of future innovation and for the sake of road safety, there is a great hope in fully supporting, or even replacing, the human driver by reliable technology. But, due to the novelty of this context, an important care will have to be devoted to investigate drivers' expectation, needs, behavior and functional abilities to reach this goal. In this context, this paper reviews several human factors issues related to partial and fully automated vehicles, with discussion of strengths and weaknesses of methods investigating driver automation acceptability, trust, situation awareness and workload. Main results of these parameters in relation to automated driving are presented and relevant methodologies to investigate these human variables are discussed in the perspective of real road experiments context.

Reducing driver's behavioural uncertainties using an interdisciplinary approach: Convergence of Quantified Self, Automated Vehicles, Internet Of Things and Artificial Intelligence.
Abstract:Growing research progress in Internet of Things (IoT), automated/connected cars, Artificial Intelligence and person's data acquisition (Quantified Self) will help to reduce behavioral uncertainties in transport and unequivocally influence future transport landscapes. This vision paper argues that by capitalizing advances in data collection and methodologies from emerging research disciplines, we could make the driver amenable to a knowable and monitorable entity, which will improve road safety. We present an interdisciplinary framework, inspired by the Safe system, to extract knowledge from the large amount of available data during driving. The limitation of our approach is discussed.
