The use of drone technology in utility operations is expected to expand significantly as a result of lower prices and the easing of federal drone regulations. A growing number of utilities are already testing and making use of this technology to improve operational efficiencies. Researchers at North Carolina State University and ElectriCities of North Carolina recognized the potential uses for UAS in supporting the operation and maintenance of municipal power distribution systems and sought DEED’s support in exploring its practical value. They took a close look at how UAS can address the needs of public power utilities, estimated the cost savings and increased efficiency resulting from its use, and took a deep dive into the capabilities offered.
