This article mainly analyses the relative importance of the different inland transport modes (road, rail, inland waterways) in the European Union (EU). It explains the principles of the modal split and the adjustments applied to the road freight data in order to allow for a comparison of the shares taken by each of the three modes in the transport performance on a given country’s territory. In addition, this
article presents the results on modal split for five transport modes (including maritime and air transport) at the EU level and explains the principle of calculation of air and maritime transport performance.
